Decorating a tiered tray is a great way to add pretty decor to your home and I’d like to share how to decorate a tiered tray for spring.
I want to share with you how to decorate a tiered tray for the spring. Tiered trays are a popular decor piece right now. They make a great decor item and can be placed many places throughout your home. Tiered trays are so fun to style. I am sharing a spring themed tray but these tips can apply to any decorating theme.
What is a Tiered Tray?
A tiered tray is a round tray with two or three levels of trays stacked on top of one another. They were typically used as tiered serving trays for desserts or other decorative food items. More recently they have become popular to display home decor items. The decorations are often centred around a certain season or theme.
Where to use a Tiered Tray
Tiered trays can be used many places throughout your home. For instance on your table, counters or island in your kitchen. The coffee table or end table in the living room is another good spot. In your bedroom, a tiered tray looks so pretty displayed on a dresser.
Where to Buy a Tiered Tray
Tiered trays can be found at most home decor stores like Winners, Homesense or Hobby Lobby. They come in many different colours and styles from rustic to farmhouse. Popular colours are white, black and wood stains. Tiered trays can be made from wood, glass, enamel or even galvanized metal. There are lots of different styles and sizes to choose from, so think about where you want to use it. What size would fit that spot best? What colour and style would fit in with the rest of your home decor? Another tip to think about, is that usually tiered tray are redecorated often and buying a neutral piece may work the best for using anywhere in your house.

Themes and Inspiration Ideas for Tiered Trays
Right now we are talking about decorating for spring but tiered trays offer a wonderful spot to change up your home decor for any season or theme. The other seasons of Summer, Fall and Winter are fun to decorate for too. Some other great ideas are the holidays like Valentine’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas. I loved decorating this tray for Valentine’s Day. https://behomeinspired.com/2022/01/31/how-to-decorate-your-home-for-valentines-day/. An everyday tiered tray that is not based around a season or holiday can be so cute as well. For example, a kitchen tiered tray with miniature pretty kitchen items like rolling pins, cutting boards and bowls.
Collecting Decor for a Tiered Tray
Here is a list of items for your tiered tray. Decide on the colour and theme of the items you want to display. Then go shop your house for any little items you have already that may work for decor items. I like to gather all of my items for the tray and then sit down with my tray to decorate once I’ve collected everything.
- Tiered tray
- Greenery
- Florals
- 15 -20 miniature decor items ( this will of course depend on the size of the tray and how many levels)
- Miniature signs
- Candles
- Wooden beads
Shop at your local dollar spot or dollar store for mini versions of decor items. Also think about what you could DIY or make to use as decor on your tiered tray
For the Spring or Easter theme that I am using today as an example, I wanted to go with a garden outdoor theme using lots of flowers and greenery. I found a pretty, ceramic bird and bunny ornaments in various sizes to fit on the tray.
Greenery and Florals
Greenery is a great decor item to use on a tray. It works great as filler in empty areas or set in mini pots or containers. Greenery adds a bright fresh look when used in any decor.
Florals also look great on a tiered tray, especially with the spring theme I’m using today. I am using pretty coral and yellow coloured carnations with sprigs of white baby breath and pussy willows. All work well as spring flowers.
Miniature Decor
My miniature decor items are a blue ceramic bird and a miniature grey ceramic bunny and bird. Look for varying sizes of decor items. These will help add depth and dimension to the tray. Other garden themed decor items are the adorable miniature shovel and rake I found from the dollar store. I also found miniature terracotta pots and painted them with white chalk paint. Then I added green moss and sprigs of greenery and flowers to them. A tiny wooden birdhouse completes my collection for this tray.
Miniature signs add a fun element to a tiered tray. Look for them at a dollar stores, dollar spots or craft stores. I found this adorable sign at Michaels. A tiny sign would also make a great DIY.
Candles displayed in a pretty container or holder are another pretty decor item that looks good on a tiered tray.
Wooden beads are another popular decor item often used when styling similar decor items together and the tiered tray is no exception.
How to Decorate a Tiered Tray
Now that you’ve gathered and collected all your tiered tray items, it’s time for the best part…. decorating it. Sit down with your collected items and start playing around with arranging them on your tray. It’s a good idea to start with the larger decor items first and then work down to the smaller items. Lastly add in any greenery and florals. Think about where your tray is going to sit. If it’s on a back counter, you will only need to decorate the front and sides. When the tiered tray is sitting in the middle of a table or where it will be seen from all sides, don’t forget to decorate all around the tray. This is why you may need a few more or less decor items.
Once you’ve placed all your items on the tray, stand back and have a good look at it. It can take a bit to arrange everything to look just how you want it too. Remember decorating is fun and most decorators rearrange quite a bit to get it exactly how it looks best! Place your tiered tray in it’s spot and enjoy!
Enjoy the Finished Tray
