Simple, easy ways to shop your home and decorate for Valentine’s Day by mostly using what you have already.
As we are starting to see the end of January approaching, I am starting to think about Valentine’s Day. Although I don’t go all out and decorate the whole house, I am excited to add some pretty pink and a red decor in a few spots around my home. Our winter is still cold and snowy here in Canada, so adding these warm cozy colours feels cheery. It gives our family a fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. My kids really do enjoy the pretty colours, heart decor and celebrating the day.
So let’s discuss how we can easily look around our homes and gather items that would work to decorate for Valentine’s Day. You’d be surprised how many items you can actually find that would be perfect to use. First think about what colours you would like to use to decorate….maybe it’s the pinks, or the just the reds and whites or maybe it’s using a combination of pinks and reds. Black, white and natural wood make great accents along with these colours. I am going to give you some ideas of what items to search your house for.
Throws and Pillows
One of the first things I can think of is, checking out your selection of blankets, throws and pillows that you may have in different rooms of your home or even tucked away in a closet. Think of not only of different shades of pink or red but also of the neutral colours. Textures also really add depth and warmth as well. Fur and knits are an example of this.
Candles and holders
The second items to gather are candles and candle holders. Pretty glass colours, rose gold and clear glass holders can make beautiful candle holders. You can use white candles of different shapes and sizes including the realistic battery operated ones if you need that option. I love the battery operated pillar candles that are on a timer and automatically go on when it gets dark outside. Candles add such a soft warm romantic glow to your home. They can be placed on your mantle, end tables, shelves, counters or tables. Candle are a great way to decorate your home for Valentine’s Day.
Flowers
The third thing to add to your Valentine’s Day decor would be beautiful flowers. They can be artificial flowers or real flowers. If you don’t find any at home, check out your local craft store and buy some pretty stems. If you prefer real flowers, grab a gorgeous bouquet from your local florist or grocery store and arrange in a pretty vase on your dining table or coffee table.
Decorations
Now we are going to look for decor items that you can easily add to blend in with your colours and the Valentine’s Day theme. For instance, any type of decor items that have hearts, lace or accent pieces could be added to help make a pretty statement. These accent pieces can be added to your regular decor to bring in the pops of colour and help create a nice Valentine’s feel to your home. Don’t worry if you don’t have anything that would work for this type of decor. You can always go shopping for a few cute pieces or get a bunch of DIY ideas off Pinterest and make some decor.
Printable Art
Printable art is a really nice easy way to add a fun element to your decor. Look for free printable’s that pertain to Valentine’s Day and the theme of love. These are great to print off and pop into a pretty frame. So you can display them on your shelf, mantle or table. If you don’t have a printer or one that prints well, send the printable to your local printer. That way you’ll still be able to use it for a fairly minimal cost. I have included a free printable for you to print off. Find a cute 8 x 10 frame laying around your house or pick up an inexpensive one at a dollar store. Put the print in your frame and it’s all ready to display. Below is your free link to download this printable.
Dishes and Glassware
Finding dishes to display delicious heart shaped cookies or any other cute Valentine’s baking is another great idea. For example, white or clear glass trays or a glass domed cake plate. Tiered trays are another very popular way to not only display baking or treats but also miniature decor as I mentioned earlier. Clear glass mason jars or cookie jars also work well to display all those adorable candies and treats that come out for Valentine’s Day. Add in a cute red or pink dish or bowl and your display will be very sweet.
I hope these simple, easy ideas will give you inspiration to decorate your home this year for Valentine’s Day. Of course it’s also ok to head out to do a little decor shopping too. Now that you know what you have collected in your own home, it’ll be easy to look for those pieces that you wish to buy, to add in.
Please share with me in the comments what your favourite decor item is for Valentine’s Day. Happy decorating and happy shopping!
