Here are some simple home decor ideas and themes for summer that will add a subtle touch of the summer season into your home right now. Adding a few summer pieces of decor will make your home feel pretty, welcoming and enjoyable for you and your guests.
For many of us, summer means holidays, beach days and more laid back relaxing days. Days filled with outdoor fun and BBQ’s. While I like to enjoy this season to the fullest, I still am at home quite a bit or having guests over too. I don’t tend to spend much time decorating but I’d still like to add a few simple touches of summer to carry me through from the spring to fall season. Today I want to share with you some easy simple home decor ideas and themes for the summer.
Whether you wish to go all out and fully decorate your home or simply add a few summer touches to your home, I hope these ideas will give you some inspiration.
Colours of Summer
There are so many colours that I can think of related to summer. For instance, various shades of blue definitely come to mind. Whether it’s navy or aqua, these colours look great when used in summer decor. Bright, vibrant pops of colour are also very pretty shades for summer. Colours like pinks, yellows and oranges.
Pick what colour you love and what works for along with your home and go with it. I have a very neutral whitish grey colour on my walls, with accents of aqua already. So I tend to lean towards the blueish coastal shades of summer.
Often our outdoor decks and patios are extensions of our home. We spend a lot of time outside enjoying these spaces, so why not decorate them a bit and make them feel cute and cozy. Choose to carry the same colours or themes outdoors or do something totally different.
Here are a few easy outdoor space decor ideas. Set out some pretty cushions on the patio chairs. Hang a few strands of lights above your deck or patio for night time gatherings. Twinkling lights look so neat when they’re turned on at night. Laying out a fresh indoor/outdoor rug on the deck can pull the whole area together well
Flowers and Greenery
Bring those beautiful summer blooms into your home’s indoor spaces. Cut fresh summer flowers from your garden and fill pretty vases, setting them in various places throughout the house. If you don’t have any, look for fresh bundles at local markets to buy. Green houseplants look so light and airy as well when placed throughout your home or even outside on the patio.
Light and Airy
Whatever you choose to do for your summer home decor, keeping the rooms in your home light and airy for summer is a great tip. Change out your bed linens to lighter ones. Add lighter throws and pillow to the living room. By lighter, I’m meaning in texture and material. A pretty linen throw will look better than a heavy knit one right now. It can also be used for those cooler evenings or when the AC is a little too chilly.

Coastal Home Decor
Perhaps one of the more common theme for summer is the coastal theme. There are a few coastal styles or themes. Coastal decor can be with very neutral colours like warm seagrass baskets or rattan chairs, along with hints of blue. The coastal theme can also be very “beachy” with bright aqua and turquoise colours along with lots of beach, ocean themed decor.
Nautical Home Decor
Nautical themes for summer also make great summer decor. I used to be a huge fan of lighthouses years ago and collected many nautical pieces surrounding this theme. Some other ideas for decor pieces besides the lighthouses are ships, nautical knots, buoys, boats, fishing, lifesavers, ship’s wheel, fishing nets, lobster cages…. The list is long but as you can see, it’s actually a really fun theme to collect or decorate for.
Cabin or Lake Theme
The cabin or lake theme is another really unique but fun theme to incorporate into summer decor, whether you’re at home or at the cabin. This can look like wildlife, woods, lake or cabin inspired decor in the form of signs, bears, plaid, checks or even some fishing decor in this theme too.
Camping decor is quite popular. Whether it’s tenting, motorhomes, campers or camp fires, I see lots of home decor based around this summer theme. Cute little vintage campers on tea towels or signs. There are many ways to bring this theme into your summer decor. For example, cute little vintage campers on tea towels or signs. Maybe camping is something you really love to do, so even if you can’t do it all summer long, bringing it into your home with decor will hopefully bring back all the fun filled memories.
Patriotic Summer Decor
Throwing in some patriotic decor is super popular around the beginning of summer. Americans celebrate their Independence Day holiday on July 4th with red, white and blue coloured decor. In Canada, our national patriotic holiday is called Canada Day, which is celebrated on July 1st. Red and white coloured decor are used for Canada Day. Patriotic decor can be in the form of flags, banners, signs, wreaths or flowers.
Fruit Summer Decor
Decorating with a fruit theme is another pretty summer idea that’s fun to use, especially in the kitchen. Lemons, peaches, strawberries or watermelon all make a great theme to decorate with for summer. Think about using them on a tiered tray, displayed in vases or bowls or on cute tea towels.
