This is a great budget friendly way to change out decor and look for those perfect items you are wanting to use in your home. Whether it’s a piece of furniture or a new-to-you rug, these items and many more can be found at a garage sale or a thrift shop for a very reasonable price. Here are some tips on where to shop and hopefully find some amazing thrifted home decor.
Finding the Perfect Item
I have grown to love and appreciate finding home decor items at garage sales or online marketplace. Many items in my home are thrifted and I love the unique character and charm it adds. I enjoy the thrill of finding the perfect item that I’ve been searching for. I think this started many years ago as a little girl, when I went to garage sales and thrift shops with my Mom. Oh the wonderful treasures I’d find….
Some decor finds are in perfect shape and perfectly clean, others may need a little TLC. A good scrub or a wash of your new decor item will leave it looking fresh and ready to use. If you are up for it, putting a coat of paint on a old dresser or piece of furniture can give it the perfect charm for your home. Think about ways you can repurpose the piece, whether its cleaning it up or putting a new piece of fabric on it. Here’s an idea for making patio cushions look like new. https://behomeinspired.com/2022/04/21/diy-patio-cushion-makeover-using-paint/.
Why Thrift for Home Decor?
Thrifting or shopping for second hand items can be a lots of fun. Hunting for that perfect decor piece that you’ve had on your list for so long is a challenge but very rewarding when you find it.
You will generally pay less money for an item then when buying it brand new! Some items are almost new or have never been used and you can score a very good deal when buying them used.
The decor piece in your home will be unique and can’t be found in many other homes because it was not bought from a retail home decor store.
Vintage and antique decor items are very popular right now. They fit in nicely with the farmhouse, cottage core and vintage decor trends we are currently seeing in homes.
Now let’s get to the different ways of how to shop for budget friendly home decor.
Where to Shop and Find Thrifted Home Decor
- Garage or Yard Sales
- Moving or Estate Sales
- Small businesses
- Online
- Flea Markets
- Free items
- Thrift Shops or Second Hand Stores
Garage Sales or Yard Sales
It’s that time of year where garage sale are really popular. People are going through there house decluttering and getting rid of items. Many towns have community wide garage sales on certain weekends of the year. Neighbourhoods will also get together and host multiple yard sales. These sales are usually held at individual’s homes or yards but having a bunch together makes it fun to shop lots of sales at once.
Moving or Estate Sales
These are very similar to garage sales but are another great place to search for that perfect find. Often people want to get rid of their stuff due to moving and you can find some great deals and good prices.
Small Businesses
This is an interesting one but I recently found an adorable little shop that a lady set up to sell furniture and vintage decor items. She had painted and fixed up some gorgeous old furniture pieces and also collected and sold vintage decor pieces as well. This business owner had a big sale on and I was able to find some pieces at her little shop for my home.
Online
One of the most popular places to shop online is facebook marketplace. Posting and selling online is very popular and gives people the comfort of selling from home and having the buyer pick up the item or mailing it to them. Do a specific search for an item you are looking for and turn on notifications for that item. Other online companies are Ebay, Kijiji, Poshmark https://poshmark.com/ or even Etsy. Some of these online sites can be pricey, so know what is a reasonable price to pay before you buy. Also consider the shipping price before buying. Obviously it will be cheaper to pick up your items in person. You may have to look frequently for a specific item. Certain popular items go really fast, so be prepared to go pick it up quickly.
Flea Markets
Flea markets are generally where a bunch of different people bring their items to sell at a large hall or outdoor area. You can walk around and search over many tables all in one area, hopefully scoring some great finds. Search your local towns or city for any upcoming events.
Free Items
So sometimes people just want to quickly get rid of their items because they just don’t have time to sell it or simply couldn’t be bothered to haul it away. Instead they place it at the end of their driveway with a free sign by it. I have found some really neat decor items like this. One was two adorable vintage chairs which are perfect for sitting on my front step or displaying a plant. Another time I found a huge vintage picture frame which I plan to DIY for in my bedroom. So don’t be afraid to stop and check out a free pile.
Thrift Shop or Secondhand Store
So this last one is probably the most obvious and easiest to shop at. Find out where your local shops are, their hours and head over to take a look. Knowing when the store puts out new items is a great tip for you because those are the days you may want to try visit that shop.
