There are many beautiful Christmas colours to use in a home. One of my favourites is a black, white and red Christmas colour scheme. Paired with natural wood elements, these colours show warmth and coziness with a timeless, modern farmhouse feel.
I’d like to share how to use a black, white and red Christmas colour scheme with home decor, for the holiday season, throughout your home.
Black and White Colour Scheme
Typically I use black and white as my main colours, with accents of a classic red throughout the decor. Paired with natural wood elements, this combination of colours give off a modern farmhouse feel. Perhaps with a slight Scandinavian style too. It feels cozy, warm and yet very festive with the pops of red thrown in.
Timeless and old vintage pieces also look great paired in with these colours and this style.
Other Styles With These Colours
Using these same combinations of colours, other decorating styles can be achieved as well.
A more modern look can be achieved by using the black, white and red colours with more sleek, straight lines and leaving out the vintage, farmhouse decor.
If a more glam Christmas style is preferred, try adding in more sparkle and glitter to the black and white theme.
The Christmas Tree Colour Scheme
One of the rooms statement pieces with Christmas decor, is often the Christmas tree. It definitely is a focal point filled with Christmas tree decorations. I like to incorporate my Christmas colour palette and my style when decorating the tree.
Using a flocked white Christmas tree, I wound black and white check ribbon throughout it, as well as some red plaid ribbon. Next I added a natural wood bead garland. The ornaments I hung are lots of warm, cozy white balls, black and white fabric balls, pops of red ornaments and white glass ornaments with woodland animals on them. Ornaments with burlap, twine, pinecones and natural wood accents blend in well with the overall Christmas scheme.
I have always wanted a tree collar in a natural basket weave and this year I finally found the perfect one for my tree. The natural colour and texture of the basket weave helps tie together all the colours and the natural wood look I wanted.
When it comes time to put the presents under the Christmas tree, I used a cute black and white throw at the bottom for an easy, simple tree skirt. An old white vintage metal star at the top completes the look of the tree.
Black, White and Red Decor Ideas
Next let’s talk about decorating the rest of the house with Christmas decor in our colours of black, white and red.
A natural wood blanket ladder stands in one corner of the living room with cute knit stockings hung on it. If you don’t have a fireplace or mantel, this is a perfect place to hang the Christmas stockings. I have a whole separate blog post here about my DIY Christmas Stocking Ladder. https://behomeinspired.com/2023/01/13/diy-christmas-stocking-ladder-a-no-fireplace-mantel-option/
A ceramic little vintage village sits up on top of the piano, make an adorable display.
I pulled the village theme together with a mini white house light garland hung on the wall above the couch.
Two pretty red berry wreaths with a white frosting finish look so pretty hung over the wall sconces.
Christmas Decor Vignettes
Vignettes are a great way to display your Christmas decor and style throughout different rooms in your home.
Here are a few examples of some cute displays.
A tiny wood village display on a shelf or a nativity displayed on a side table. A wooden tray filled with a frosted pine tree and vintage looking Christmas ornaments make another adorable display.
A tiered tray is another great way to display home decor in your Christmas colours or style. A gingerbread cookie theme is one idea I used on my tiered tray in my kitchen.
Hot Cocoa bars are another great Christmas decor display. Not only do they tie together your Christmas colours, they can be functional and fun for the whole family to use.
Home Decor Accents
Pillows and throws are a warm, cozy way to display the black and white with red accent colour scheme. Try using them in the living room on the chairs, couches and in the bedroom.
Pretty Christmas hand towels, shower curtains or a rug in the bathroom help tie together the overall colours and Christmas decor.
Using festive dish clothes, oven mitts, potholders and towels in the kitchen is fun too.
Small accent rugs used in various rooms along with your decor, work well to tie together the colours and make a room feel cozy.
Christmas wreaths hung on the inside and outside doors are a very beautiful way to decorate a room. Using the black, white and red Christmas colour scheme on the wreaths will bring everything together really well.
Lighting Ambiance
Soft, cozy lighting during the cool winter months is so welcoming and adds a wonderful Christmas feel to any home. All those twinkling mini lights added to the Christmas decor around the home help create a soft magical glow. Besides the Christmas tree, try adding in mini lights to garland, mini trees ,wreaths, light up villages, and real or battery operated candles.
Natural Wood Elements
Here are some examples of ways to incorporate the natural wood elements into this colour scheme.
The wood furniture in your home certainly counts towards adding in the wood elements but if that’s not an option, here are a few other ideas.
- wood trays
- wood buckets
- natural wood villages
- wood bead garland
- blanket ladder
The natural elements of pinecones or wood ornaments can also add a nice touch to the decor too.
Greenery
It’s always good to use Christmas greenery with all colour schemes and styles but it definitely goes well with black, white and red.
Try bringing in some pine, cedar, eucalyptus or really any type of fresh Christmas greenery and it will add so much to your home decor.
Besides the main Christmas tree, it’s now very popular to use many Christmas trees in various sizes throughout the home. I love the look of mini trees with tiny twinkling lights sitting on a shelf or counter.
Greenery can also be in the form of garland, wreaths and stems.
Christmas Colour Conclusion
I hope that I’ve inspired you with this black, white and red Christmas colour scheme when decorating your home this year.
The good news is that you can use your own personal style and yet with this colour combo, create a similar look.
The warmth and coziness of the season will be seen and appreciated by simply bringing together some of these designs ideas within your home decor.
I hope the festive season will be felt all throughout your home this time of year.
Merry Christmas! Have a great week.
