Here is an easy DIY Fall pressed flower art project that looks so pretty in frames. It’s perfect for displaying with your Fall home decor.
Hi and welcome to my mini fall project series. This is the first project which is an easy DIY Fall pressed flower art project in some adorable frames. These frames displaying gorgeous pressed Fall leaves and flowers, look very pretty displayed on a table or on a shelf along with other Fall home decor. This project is simple and easy to make and is quite inexpensive.
We are in the middle of our Fall season where I live. It’s so pretty to see all the beautiful Fall colours outside on the trees, bushes and flowers. It’s fun to make a project where I can bring some of these Fall inspired items into our home.

What is Pressed Flower Art?
Pressed flower art is using flowers, petals or leaves to create a detailed picture. The flowers or foliage are pressed down flat, dried and then placed in a pretty frame in this really easy project.
I just discovered the term Oshibana is the official term for pressed flower art and originated in the 1500’s. I never knew this before and thought this little history fact was kind of interesting.
Why This is a Great Fall Decor Project
This makes a great Fall decor project because it’s usually pretty easy to find Fall leaves, they are free and they are just so pretty. By bringing them into your home, you can enjoy them inside and even use for a long time.
Supplies Needed for the Project
- Picture frames
- Leaves
- Flowers
- Plain white paper
- Heavy books
Where to Find the Supplies
It is pretty easy to find the supplies needed for this project. I bought three 5×7 pictures frames from the Dollarama store for four dollars each. I found some cute white frames on Amazon if it’s easier to order online. https://www.amazon.com/.
The only other supplies you need are leaves and flowers from outside, two pieces of plain white paper and some heavy books. Another form of heavy weights will do too.
What Fall Foliage to Look For
This is definitely the fun part, where you get to go outside and explore or at least go for a walk in nature. Look for different kinds of trees that will have different shapes and colours of Fall leaves. Pick a variety of sizes that will fit into the frames you are using.
I wanted to have plenty of yellow in my frames, as deep mustard yellow is the main colour that I’m using in my Fall decorating this year. I found some pretty yellow leaves off of my Green Ash trees in our yard. The deep burgundy branch is from a Cotoneaster bush and it offers such a nice contrast to the yellow. Don’t forget to check out your flower beds. I used some of my beautiful blooming perennial False Sunflowers to press in one of the frames.
How to DIY Fall Pressed Flower Art
First of all go ahead and pick some flowers and leaves that you want to press and put in frames. Next I arranged them on a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 inch white paper. Try to arrange the flower art so they are not touching each other on the paper. Put another piece of white paper on top to protect them.
Set the papers with the leaves and flowers inside on a smooth, hard surface. Lay some heavy books on top. The weight of books will press the leaves and flowers flat. This will take a few days. I left mine for almost a week and they were perfectly pressed flat.
After the leaves and flowers are all pressed it’s time to put them into frames. Remove the backing from the back of the frame. I used the back side of the paper that was already in the frame for my background. If you wanted to have another colour background paper besides white, you could cut another piece in whatever colour you wanted.
Arrange the pressed flower art right onto the glass inside the frame. Play around with it a little to get it sitting just right. I put the background paper and frame backing on several times and looked at it to get it just how I wanted it to look. When you’re satisfied with how it looks, attach the backing firmly onto the frame.
Display Your Fall Project
Depending on the amount of frames you decide to use or the size of your frames, choose a nice spot in your home to display them. With using three 5×7 frames, I decided to display them on top of my piano. I used Fall florals, a table runner made from fabric and some pumpkins together with the frames. Overall, I was quite pleased with the look of this Fall display on top of my piano.
Other places that would work to display your Fall pressed flower art project are shelves, a dresser, table or a counter. Think about spots around your home, like the bathroom, dining room, kitchen, living room, bedroom or entrance.
