Fall is definitely approaching fast and it’s nice to give our home a little refresh for the upcoming season. It is the time of year for all things cozy and welcoming. With that in mind I’d like to share with you 5 ways to prepare your home for the Fall season.
Welcome Fall Season
Fall is it’s own very unique season where I live. The leaves and foliage all change into amazing colours of burnt orange, yellow and burgundy. The daytime is sunny and warm but the nights are cool and crisp. It’s a very beautiful time of year.
The kids are back to school already or very soon and around our parts of the world, the crop harvesting has begun. Both of these are sure signs that we are entering the Fall season and before we know it, winter and Christmas will be here.
5 Ways to Prepare Your Home
I’d like to share will you 5 ways to prepare your home for this fall season. Ways to embrace the season and make your home feel cozy, welcoming and ready for all the Fall decorations.
- Pack away the summer decor
- Declutter
- Clean
- Schedule a donation drop off
- Plan your fall decor
Pack Away the Summer Decor
As wonderful as the fall season is, I’m sad that summer is almost finished. Maybe it’s because our summer season is so short or maybe I need to decorate for summer a little earlier next year. Whatever the reason, summer has flown by and I’m just a little sad to take down the summer decor and pack it all away.
Clear away all of the decor, leaving only what you want to use throughout the Fall. For instance, I usually leave my houseplants where they are. It’s really nice to start with a clean, fresh slate when preparing your home for Fall.
Declutter
As you are packing away the summer decor, decide whether you want to get rid or anything. Go through the storage bins and see whether you can declutter some items you will no longer use or want. Look through and declutter a room or a cupboard where junk has been collecting during the summer.
For me the area that usually needs my attention now is the space where the kids have dumped their school supplies, books and gear at the end of June. When school is done for the year, I now try to designate boxes for each child to put all their things into, so it’s contained until it’s time to sort and declutter. This usually doesn’t happen until now, after we’re finished all of the fun summer activities over the months of July and August.
Decluttering make a person feel better and frees up the spaces in your home. When you are decluttering, items can be donated to a second hand store or sold on a buy and sell.
Fall Cleaning
Cleaning the areas that you have packed away and decluttered will leave your home feeling fresh and ready for fall. So grab your vacuum, cleaning rags and supplies and give that area or room a good clean.
I love to use a more natural approach to cleaning, without all the chemicals so I use my microfibre cleaning clothes and natural cleaners. Using essential oils like lemon or citrus, leave the room with a nice clean smell. Here is a link to some natural cleaning products I love to use. https://norwex.biz/
Drop off the Donations
After clearing out the summer decor, decluttering and cleaning it’s a great idea to drop off any donations at the second hand store. I know for me, it’s so easy to put my bags and boxes of items I’m getting rid of in the garage with plans to take them in later. Of course, later just doesn’t happen anytime soon. So in order to prevent this from happening it’s really helpful to set a specific time, where I take and drop off the donations I’ve cleared out, at the store.
I like to tell myself, that after the trip to the donation store, I can shop in the store to look for some home decor that would be fun to add to my new fall decor.
Thrifted home decor is a great budget-friendly way to shop for new pieces. Check out my thrifting home decor series here.

Planning Fall Decor
Leave the space that you have just packed away, decluttered and cleaned empty for a few days. This makes it easier to take the time to look at the uncluttered space and visualize what you want to put up in that space. Having a clean, empty space also seems to give me the inspiration to redecorate and put out fresh new decor in that area.
There are many options, beautiful colours and styles of fall decor to choose from these days. Look at the main wall, floor and furniture colour of the room. Gather inspiration from Pinterest, magazines and home decor stores. Pick a pretty colour or combination of colours you wish to use and then decide if you’ll use a certain style or theme. For example pumpkins or sunflowers. Of course many elements of Fall decor can be combined to make a beautiful display without needing to pick any one theme.
