Valentine’s day is fast approaching and I like to add a few touches of hearts and love to my home. I was searching for an easy way to make a few valentine’s day crafts to display this year. I came up with four adorable DIY valentine’s day canvas heart art ideas.
This DIY craft is perfect because it is a simple project. It’s also very budget friendly, as you can purchase most of the supplies at a dollar store or conveniently order them online. The heart canvases add the perfect pop of red and pink colour into your home for Valentine’s Day.
Decorating Your Home For Valentine’s Day
I don’t go all out with decorating for valentines day but I do still like to put out a few decor items around my kitchen and living room. Using some pops of pink in the living room, with throws and pillows is so cozy and fits the season perfect. A tiered tray decorated for Valentine’s day sits on my kitchen counter. A few decor items sitting on my shelf and on a table centrepiece are about it. Very simple but pretty and fun.
Here is a previous post to check out that is all about how to decorate for Valentine’s Day. https://behomeinspired.com/2022/01/31/how-to-decorate-your-home-for-valentines-day/
Who can do this Valentine’s Day DIY?
I want to say that this is the perfect craft for all skill levels. Older kids would have fun crafting these canvases and younger kids would too. (With a little help from an adult.) It’s an great way to do an easy valentine’s day craft together. My family definitely enjoys doing a good art project together.

Where to Buy the Supplies
First I like to always remind you to shop around your home first. Check out that craft supply bin or cupboard. I was happy to find extra canvases, felt hearts from last year and some pretty pink fabric to use for my fabric heart.
Next I suggest checking out the dollar store or local craft stores. I found the paper roses and paper doilies at the dollar store. You can also buy very reasonably priced canvases here too. Fabric bundles and an inexpensive glue gun can also be bought here too. The felt hearts came in packages from the dollar store as well. Their Valentine’s Day craft supplies are very good this time of year. Check out the seasonal section as well as the craft section in the store.
If you don’t have access to the stores I mentioned above or just prefer online shopping, I have included amazon links for all the supplies needed in the above supply list.
Which Colours Should I Use?
I guess this may sound like a obvious question. Of course red and pink are the two main colours used with Valentine’s Day decor. But I want to encourage you to think about many different shades of these two colours. There are so many shades of pink and red that range from light to dark and bright to muted. Try using a variety of these shades when your crafting or pick a couple favourite colour shades that will match in well with your home decor.
Don’t forget that you can add in white, black, silver or gold colours too.
What to Use for a Heart Pattern or Template
I had a wooden heart cutout sitting on my tiered tray that worked perfect to trace around for my heart shape. For those of you that don’t have anything handy in your home, I’ve included a free printable template of a whole heart that will fit perfect on the 9×12” size art canvas.
Print it off with your printer and cut it out. Use this pattern to gently trace the outline of the heart onto the canvas or your fabric.
Canvas Heart Art with Fabric #1
Let’s make the fabric heart canvas first. Find a pretty scrap of fabric that is at least 9×9 inches in size. I used a pink color. Place the heart pattern template on top of the wrong side of the fabric and trace around the heart with a pencil. Cut out the heart with scissors. Place the fabric heart on top of the blank canvas and position until you’ve found the right spot. Using the hot glue gun, glue along the outer edge of the heart a section at a time, firmly pressing it down as you go. Your first heart art canvas is done!
Canvas Heart Art With Roses #2
This one is so pretty and I love how it turned out. I used packages of paper flowers but small silk roses would work well too. First I cut the stems off of the flowers, right close to the bottom of the rose. Next use the same heart template and trace a heart right onto the blank canvas. This will make an easy pattern for you to know where to glue the roses. Glue the roses onto the canvas one by one, by adding a dot of hot glue to the bottom of each flower and pressing them firmly in place. Place the roses close enough together so they are touching. This is it for your second heart canvas.
Heart Canvas Art DIY #3
This third heart canvas is super simple and easy to make but looks very pretty when its done. Turn one paper doily backwards and add some hot glue around the outside edges of the heart. Quickly but carefully place the heart onto the canvas and press firmly on the edges to stick to the canvas. That’s it!
Canvas Felt Hearts Art Project #4
These pretty felt hearts came in a package of assorted sizes and colours. I figured out a pattern I liked by laying them out onto my blank canvas. Once I had them all arranged in a pattern that I liked, I glued them down to the canvas one by one.
Bonus Ideas for More Heart Canvas Art
A variation of this would be, to draw a heart onto the canvas with the heart pattern you used earlier. Then glue a bunch of little felt hearts inside, filling in the shape of the heart with a lot of little hearts.
Try painting the entire canvas with acrylic paint before adding the hearts and rose onto the canvas. This would add more colour and a pretty look to the art.
Trace the heart pattern onto the canvas and fill in the heart with an assortment of adorable pink and red buttons in different sizes. I’ve seen this one done and love the finished texture and pattern it creates.
My last bonus idea is similar. Again trace the heart patterns onto the canvas and then glue little pompoms inside to fill in the heart shape you have created. The end result is a cute canvas pompom filled heart.
Where to Display the Heart Canvas
The Valentine’s Day canvases will look very cute in many different spots in your home. This is the fun part where you get to find your favourite place to display them. Try leaning them up against a wall on top of a shelf or on top of an end table in the living room. They could be displayed on a mantel, kitchen counter or on a bedroom dresser. You could add a hanger and use the canvas as wall art. There are many places to add them into your home decor.
In Conclusion
I hope you have enjoyed this easy DIY Valentine’s day canvas heart art project. They are so budget friendly, easy to make and perfect to use for display in your home decor for Valentine’s day. It’s a simple way to make a great gift to give as well.
What heart canvas is your favourite? Which ones do you want to DIY?
Take care and have a wonderful week!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
